- Wilder Institute Ghana LBG is hiring a fixed-term Project Engineer to provide engineering expertise and lead the planning, design, implementation, and delivery of infrastructure and construction activities linked to conservation and community development projects.
- Role details
- Fixed-term, full-time role based in Accra, Ghana.
- Start date: October 2026 or as soon as possible.
- Expected end date: December 2029.
- Reports to the Conservation Operations Manager.
- Project focus: infrastructure and construction activities for the Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary and the Avu Lagoon Community Protected Area.
- The role works with project staff, contractors, architects, engineers, specialty consultants, community representatives, and government authorities.
- Purpose: ensure infrastructure projects are technically sound, environmentally responsible, culturally appropriate, compliant, on schedule, within budget, and delivered to required quality standards.

Responsibilities
- Lead infrastructure projects from concept through completion, including planning, execution, monitoring, control, and close-out.
- Develop project scopes, work plans, schedules, budgets, risk registers, and delivery documentation.
- Track project milestones and performance and recommend workflow, personnel, and resource adjustments when needed.
- Identify and mitigate risks relating to scope, schedule, cost, quality, safety, environmental impact, animal welfare, and community relations.
- Provide technical oversight for engineering designs, drawings, specifications, site assessments, and construction methods.
- Review engineering designs and specifications prepared by consultants or contractors for quality, safety, constructability, and compliance.
- Conduct and oversee site assessments that consider terrain, hydrology, environmental effects, and community use.
- Support the selection of appropriate project delivery models and construction methodologies.
- Oversee construction activities to ensure work is delivered to approved scope, quality, budget, timeline, safety, and regulatory standards.
- Inspect project sites regularly and verify that materials and workmanship meet standards and local regulations.
- Identify technical risks, construction challenges, and safety concerns and communicate practical solutions promptly.
- Coordinate contractors, consultants, suppliers, government agencies, regulatory bodies, local authorities, and community stakeholders.
- Act as the main interface between Wilder Institute Ghana, external partners, and internal stakeholders on infrastructure matters.
- Support procurement, bills of quantities, RFPs, contractor evaluations, contract administration, reporting, and audit-ready records.
- Review contractor deliverables and invoices and manage budget changes with finance and procurement teams.
- Ensure project documentation is properly initiated, authorised, maintained, and available for audit or reporting.
Requirements
- Bachelor degree in Engineering, Construction, Project Management, or a related field.
- Seven to ten years of relevant project management, infrastructure, construction, architecture, or engineering experience.
- PMP certification and registration with the Ghana Institution of Engineering are preferred.
Experience
- managing budgets, contractors, consultants, schedules, and infrastructure delivery in complex environments.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
- working in remote, rural, resource-limited, community-based, NGO, or development project settings is an advantage.
- Strong understanding of site development, structures, water management, transportation infrastructure, and construction principles.

- Proven ability to manage budgets up to approximately USD 500,000, schedules, contractors, and consultants.

- Working conditions
- Based on a 40-hour work week with schedule flexibility for work across Ghana and Canada time zones.
- Includes extensive office work and long periods at computer workstations.
- Requires time at project locations and may include field conditions, rural areas, remote communities, long irregular hours, sun exposure, insects, wildlife disease exposure, heavy field equipment, trucks, ATVs, dirt roads, and difficult weather.
- Travel or residence in field communities may be required.
- Travel may include highways, dirt roads, occasional air travel, and movement between project sites and the head office.
- Outdoor work may be required and staff must follow local weather guidance on temperature and air quality.
